The Dar Choral Society was founded in the 1940s by the European community in Dar es Salaam. It has developed to date and was revived in 2009 to become a very diverse choir with many more Tanzanian nationals singing in it.
The group is without doubt one of the highlights of the classical music choral performance arena in Tanzania. With its long heritage of over 70 years of performance in Tanzania, the Choir is showing all the signs of becoming a well-disciplined modern Choir ushering in a new era of classical music in Tanzania.
The Dar Choral Society is currently performing all its concerts accompanied by a full orchestra made of both Professional and amateur musicians. The Orchestra managed by the choir is made up of the expatriates community, Tanzanians and diplomats serving the Tanzanian nation in various disciplines.
The long term goal of the Dar Choral Society is to combine the beauty of music using choral works and orchestra. It aims at promoting classical music to thousands of Tanzanians through concerts and recordings.
In addition to this, the Choir is the first and still happens to be the only one that has members of diverse cultures, nationalities, and professions. It is nick named the ‘Choir of the World in Dar’. The Choral Society co-exists and enjoys time together as one family, as Tanzanians and other nationals sing in harmony in different languages, including Kiswahili.
